Sarah was invited to attend the Aix-en-Provence ‘Voice and Creation Residency’ run by the Festival Academie in July 2015, and commissioned by the Festival to compose a piece for voice and piano.
Relativity and Revelation is a song cycle for mezzo-soprano, piano and two singing bowls. The song cycle sets poems by American poet J.L. Williams alongside translated traditional Japanese tanka poems written by Japanese monks several hundreds of years ago.
The work was premiered by Reut Ventorero (soprano) and Thomas Besnard (piano) on 10th July 2015, and recorded for later broadcast on Radio France Musique. The Festival also programmed another vocal work, Although you sit in a room that is gray for baritone voice and piano, premiered by Laurent Deleuil (baritone) and Bianca Chillemi (piano) on 17th July 2016.
As part of the residency, Sarah also led a half-hour public masterclass discussing prominent musical aspects within Relativity and Revelation, as well as talking about the collaborative nature of composer and performer.
